Organic cotton bedding is valued for its softness, breathability and durability, but proper care is essential to help it perform well over time.
This article explains how to choose high-quality organic cotton bedding and how to wash, dry and store it correctly, so your sheets stay comfortable and long-lasting.
How To Choose High-Quality Organic Bedding
1. Thread Count
One of the easiest ways to assess the merit of cotton bedding is its thread count (i.e. how tightly woven the fabric is). For organic cotton, any thread count between 200 and 600 is considered good quality.
2. Weave
Another important consideraton is the weave is an important consideration. Percale, also known as ‘plain weave’, is a simple one up/one down weave which results in a crisp, matte look and feel. The optimal thread count is 200 - 400, the latter being what our Crisp & Cool organic cotton bedding is made from. In comparison, Sateen weave is a more tightly woven pattern, which gives a silky smooth finish and is best when it has a 300 - 600 thread count. At Rise & Fall our Soft & Smooth cotton bedding boasts a 500 thread count. Both are luxurious options and which one you choose is simply a matter of preference.
3. Price
Organic cotton is a premium material and it’s worth spending a bit more money on it over buying cheaper or synthetic materials. It will last longer and its eco-friendly credentials make it a worthwhile investment for you and the planet.
4. Style
Organic cotton bedding is available in a range of colours and textures, making it easy to choose styles that suit both your bedroom and lifestyle.. Whether you prefer a bold colour, patterned bedding or something more simple - organic cotton is a versatile material that you can find in all sorts of styles.
As well as colour, organic cotton can be crafted into different textures, such as our soft crinkled lumbar cushion or organic cotton muslin throw.

How To Care for Organic Cotton Bedding
One of the great things about organic cotton bedding is that it gets softer and softer with every wash. This is because the natural fibres relax and become more pliable over time. To maintain the quality and longevity of your organic cotton sheets follow these simple tips:
1. Washing
- Wash once a week or as needed.
- Separate your organic cotton bedding, as any rough fabrics, hooks or zips may cause damage.
- Use mild detergent in cold or lukewarm (30℃) water. Opt for a gentle spin cycle.
- Avoid bleach or harsh fabric softeners which can damage the fibres, reducing their lifespan.
2. Drying
-
Air‑dry or tumble‑dry on low to medium heat to reduce energy consumption and maintain the cotton’s quality, softness and durability.
3. Ironing
- If using a dryer, try removing the sheets 5 minutes before the cycle ends.
- Give them a good shake and hang dry to finish - this will prevent them from wrinkling.
-
Iron on a low setting if needed, or smooth by hand while drying.
4. Storage
- Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
-
Use breathable storage bags to prevent moisture buildup.
