Rolodex - Series 12:

Sandeep Garg

"Try not to take life too seriously and finding something that makes you happy everyday – spending time at home, music, helping a stranger."

Meet Sandeep Garg — owner of Shreeji, the much-loved newsagent and café on Chiltern Street in Marylebone. Under Sandeep’s care, Shreeji has evolved into a calm, design-led space where print, conversation, and good coffee meet. Thoughtful, welcoming, and quietly distinctive, his approach celebrates the pleasure of slowing down — offering a place to read, browse, and connect in the midst of the city.

How do you describe what you do and what do you love the most about it?

Ultimately I am a retailer of goods and services. What I enjoy the most is to connect with people and build relationships, not only look to sell.

What morning ritual or habit have you developed that sets you up for a better day?

My morning begins with meditation, yoga and a prayer.

What’s your daily uniform?

Comfortable, well made, casual clothing that I feel happy wearing.

Where are you local to, and what’s your best neighbourhood recommendation?

Home is Dulwich, South East London. Dulwich Park is such a great local space on our doorstep, beautiful throughout the whole year in all the seasons.

Which modern convenience couldn't you live without, and why?

Has to be my telephone – it literally has everything I need.

"For me, materially better means being able to live everyday with purpose but without being completely selfish. Seeing positive change for better outcomes."

What is your favourite piece of art, regardless of medium?

The Godfather II, its rare for a sequel to be better. This had it all, amazing cast (Al Pacino & Robert De Niro), stunning acting; didn’t need to rely on the first one.

What are you currently coveting, reading, watching and listening to?

I don’t really covet – feel very blessed. Not good with reading, much more run through things. Listen to pretty much anything that has good rhythm and good lyrics; currently watching Slow Horses.

"My morning begins with meditation, yoga and a prayer."

How do you protect your time and attention from the constant demands of modern life?

Trying not to take life too seriously and finding something that makes me happy everyday – spending time at home, music, helping a stranger.

How do you maintain human connection in an increasingly digital world?

Because of what I do, fortunately I have the possibility to meet new people everyday from all walks of life and from around the world. Also as a family and individually too, we ensure that we meet regularly with friends in person.

What makes your life materially better?

Spending time with family, friends, travelling, listening to young people with new ideas (my daughter is 16) and gaining fresh perspectives.
