Brands can use a higher number of shorter, lower quality fibres, in their sheets. This will lead to a higher thread count. But the result will be a lower quality and less breathable fabric that will wear out faster. Egyptian cotton is considered one of the best you can get, but in reality, cotton grown in Egypt can be both high and low quality. Egypt is just one of many great places to grow cotton. While thread count is one factor in determining quality, the most important factor is the quality of the cotton fibre. And the longer the fibre, the more soft and durable the fabric.

But if you want that perfect hotel finish, you can iron your bed linen on a low to medium heat. How long should bed linen last?
