FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Where does cashmere come from?
- Cashmere is traditionally harvested from the goats living in the Kashmir Valley and surrounding areas of Nepal, China and Mongolia. Though cashmere goats are kept in many parts of the world now, ours comes from Mongolia.
The goats have evolved to survive temperatures as low as -30°C, with a double layer of fleece. It’s their second layer, the undercoat of ultra-fine, ultra-insulating hairs that we call cashmere.
- How to tell if cashmere is good quality?
- The easiest way to tell is by the way it feels. Gently rub the cashmere against your neck or inner arm. Authentic, high quality cashmere will feel luxuriously soft and smooth. If it's rough or itchy then it's likely to be of a lower quality or mixed with low-grade, synthetic fabrics.
Premium cashmere is also less inclined to pile. Although a natural characteristic of the fibres rubbing against different surfaces (especially on the elbows and shoulders) piling is not a sign of inferior quality. Nevertheless, at Rise & Fall we do our upmost to preserve the quality of our cashmeres by reframing from using harsh chemicals to artificially stop pilling. These are known to compromise fibre integrity.
- Why is real cashmere expensive?
- High quality cashmere is more expensive but, we promise, it's worth it. When they're looked after they retain their superior softness, warmth and longevity. Price per wear is, therefore, very low. Cheaper options will not provide the same value for money.
- Is 70% wool 30% cashmere itchy?
- We sell a range of cashmere-merino wool items which are non-itchy. Our pieces have been designed to combine the softness of cashmere with the enhanced elasticity of wool. This produces a fabric that retains it's shape, provides optimal warmth without the bulk, resists pilling and requires minimal care.
