How To Hand-Wash (recommended)
- Fill a basin with cool to lukewarm water (25–30°C).
- Add a few drops of pH-neutral, silk-safe detergent.
- Turn the garment inside out, swirl gently — no scrubbing.
- Soak for 10–30 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- Roll in a towel to remove moisture — never wring.
How To Machine Wash Safely (if label permits)
- Turn inside out and place in a mesh laundry bag.
- Use mild, silk-safe detergent.
- Wash on a delicate or silk setting at ≤ 30 °C.
- Wash with similar fabrics (only).
- Spin on a short, gentle cycle (if needed).
Drying Options At Home
- When hand washing use a cotton towel to gently roll and pat the garment - no wringing.
- Reshape whilst damp and dry away from direct sunlight to maintain size and structure.
- Lay flat or hang on a padded hanger in the shade.
- Lightly steam inside out to relax the fibers, keeping the steamer a few inches away.
- Alternatively, turn the garment inside out and gently press (don’t drag) a cool iron to remove any wrinkles or creases.
Dry Cleaning
The final option is to dry clean your organza. This may be the best option for structured garments (like layered dresses) or those with embellishments or linings. Always choose a trusted dry cleaner familiar with handling delicate silks.
Storing Silk Organza
- Store in a cool, dry, dark place to avoid discolouration (silk yellowing can occur when exposed to light and humidity).
- Use breathable garment bags or wrap in cotton/muslin with acid-free tissue paper.
- Use padded hangers - avoid wire hangers or clips, which can leave marks and overstretching.
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to ward off moths.
Ambient Care
- Silk’s natural self-cleaning properties reduce odour buildup but, in between washes, air out your garment.
- They should be kept away from direct light or heat for an hour or two.
- Avoid contact with perfumes, deodorants and lotions directly on the silk as they can stain.
Organza Care FAQs
Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent made specifically for silk or delicates.
Avoid harsh soaps, bleach or enzyme-based detergents. These can be labelled as "enzymes," "bio-enzymes" or "biological” detergents and are often highlighted as having stain-removing abilities. You don’t want to use these because they can weaken the silk fibres and cause discolouration.
No. Given the inherent quality of the material, organza does not soften after washing. However, it can lose its shape after repeated washing, thanks to its fluid weave. We, therefore, advise to only wash when truly needed.
Never tumble dry, even on low or air-only settings as heat can cause damage and make the fabric lose its shape, becoming brittle or even shrinking.
Instead, gently roll the garment in a towel to remove excess moisture, then air dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight, heat and rain.
Use a damp cloth and mild detergent to dab gently - never rub. But be careful to avoid over-wetting as water rings may form on untreated silk. For oily stains, dab with diluted white vinegar, then rinse.
Before dressing we would also advise that any deodorants, perfumes or lotions have fully soaked into your skin to avoid unwanted stains.
Silk is prone to snagging since the very long continuous yarn nature means that if jewellery catches and pulls the yarn will create a long pull. We advise all of our customers to be mindful when accessorising. If in doubt, wear a statement pair of earrings.
