Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Linen is one of the best fabrics for pillowcases. It is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, helping to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Linen is also hypoallergenic and antimicrobial so it's incredibly gentle on the skin. They also get softer - not weaker - with every wash, helping to extend their durability for years to come. In fact, you'll notice a significant improvement in softness after the first 5–10 washes. Pre-washed linen pillowcases, like ours, are already softened for immediate comfort. If you're looking for more information, read our article on the pros & cons of linen bedding.
Linen pillowcases are beneficial for the skin. Their moisture-wicking properties help to keep your skin dry overnight, reducing pore blockage and breakouts. Linen is also naturally antimicrobial so it stays cleaner for longer. While silk is considered the gold standard for hair, linen creates less friction than cotton, reducing frizz and breakage.
An Oxford pillowcase has a flat fabric border (typically 5–8cm) stitched around all four edges, creating a decorative frame. A housewife (or standard) pillowcase has a plain sewn edge with an internal flap to hold the pillow in place. Both fit the same size pillow. Oxford styles suit a more formal or layered bed look; housewife suits a cleaner, minimal finish. For standard UK pillows (50x75cm), choose a standard housewife pillowcase. King size pillowcases (50x90cm) suit longer pillows used on king and emperor beds. Square pillowcases (65x65cm) are used decoratively on top of the bed. Rise & Fall also offers a super king size (52x92cm) for use on larger beds. Always check the pillow insert dimensions before ordering.
Wash linen pillowcases at 40°C on a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach. Tumble dry on a low heat setting or air dry flat to prevent shrinkage. Linen doesn't need ironing — it looks best with its natural texture. With care, linen pillowcases soften over time and can last 5–10 years. For more tips, check out our bedding care guide.
