Series 03: Stephanie Hannington–Suen

Next in the Rolodex is Stephanie Hannington–Suen, the co-founder of homework – a sustainably minded fragrance brand with its roots in ancient Chinese philosophy and medicine, and our co–host for our summer community workshop.

What did you want to do as a child, and what do
you do now?

I can’t quite remember what I wanted to do growing up, it was definitely something creative as art was my favourite subject as a child, I loved drawing and creating sculptures. Now I’m the founder of a fragrance brand called homework.

What do you love most about what you do?

My favourite part of what I do is meeting new people. Starting homework has opened up the opportunity to connect and collaborate with like minded individuals.

How do you balance life and work?

I started homework with the hope to find balance of home and work life. The flexibility of homework has allowed me to do this. I believe in the importance of taking time out for yourself and I make sure that I work only during the day and then have evenings off to myself. Whether it would be meeting up with friends, cooking a meal or watching TV.

What’s your daily uniform?

My wardrobe is very monochrome so either something black or beige but my daily uniform at the moment would be a classic white T-shirt with black linen trousers.

What are you local to, and what's the best spot?

I’m lucky to live by Wanstead Flats, a part of Epping Forest. The best spot has to be under this great oak tree which is perfect for Summer evening picnics.

What's your favourite piece of art (regardless
of medium, e.g. painting, design, movie)?

I’m the type of person who loves to listen to a song on repeat and one that I’ll never get over is Spinning Away by Brian Eno & John Cale. I love how nostalgic it makes me feel.

What are you currently coveting, reading, watching and listening to?

Currently coveting Reome’s Three Suns Balm Cleanser, currently reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, currently watching the series One Day and currently listening to the podcast Unboxed by Connie Nam.

What's your favourite smell or sound?

Fresh jasmine in the garden is my favourite smell as it marks the coming of the warmer months.

What is the biggest luxury in your life?

Time! Since having our little boy Max, I’ve found time has been going by so quickly.

How do you strive to live a meaningful life?

Doing what you love and spending time with those you care about.
